A supplier sends a quote: “600 GSM, 18 lbs per dozen.” Does it add up? Enter the GSM, towel size and quantity to get the weight of one towel, a dozen and your full order.

What the Calculator Tells You

Enter four things:

GSM (grams per square meter)
Length and width of one towel
Unit (centimeters or inches)
Quantity (pieces)

You get the area of one towel, its weight in grams and ounces, and the total weight of the order in kg. Enter 12 as the quantity to get the weight of a dozen, then multiply the kg result by 2.2046 if you need pounds. Enter your full order quantity to plan shipping.

Note: The result is an estimate based on flat surface area. Finished weight can differ because of pile construction, borders, hems, and finishing.

GSM in Plain Words

GSM tells you how much fabric weight sits in one square meter. More weight in the same space means more cotton, so the towel feels thicker and denser. It also dries slower and costs more to wash and ship.

GSM ignores size. A face cloth and a bath sheet can both be 500 GSM, but they will weigh very differently. That is why the dozen weight only means something when you know the size.

The Math Behind It

Towel weight (g) = GSM × length (m) × width (m)
Dozen weight (lbs) = towel weight (g) × 12 ÷ 453.6
GSM from a known weight = weight (g) ÷ area (m²)
Ounces per square yard = GSM ÷ 33.906

For example, 600 GSM equals about 17.7 oz per square yard.

Three Real Scenarios

1. Bath towels for a guesthouse

You want 76 × 152 cm towels at 600 GSM.

Area = 0.76 × 1.52 = 1.155 m²
One towel = 600 × 1.155 ≈ 693 g
One dozen = 693 × 12 = 8,317 g ≈ 18.3 lbs

If a supplier quotes 18 lbs per dozen, they are in the right range.

2. Hand towels for a salon

You need 40 × 70 cm towels at 450 GSM.

Area = 0.28 m²
One towel = 450 × 0.28 = 126 g
One dozen = 1,512 g ≈ 3.3 lbs

3. A big order, and you need the freight weight

You are ordering 2,400 towels at 650 GSM, size 70 × 140 cm.

One towel = 650 × 0.98 = 637 g
Total = 637 × 2,400 = about 1,529 kg

Does the Quote Add Up? A Quick Red-Flag Test

Suppliers often quote GSM and lbs per dozen separately. Compare them yourself.

Example: A supplier offers a 30 × 60 inch towel (1.161 m²) at “700 GSM, 15 lbs per dozen.”

Expected dozen weight at 700 GSM: 700 × 1.161 × 12 ÷ 453.6 ≈ 21.5 lbs
Quoted: 15 lbs per dozen, which is about 567 g per towel
Real GSM of that towel: 567 ÷ 1.161 ≈ 488 GSM

The towel is lighter than advertised by more than 200 GSM. Ask for a sample and weigh it.

Going the other way: if a quote says “22 lbs per dozen” for the same size, each towel is about 832 g, which is around 716 GSM.

Small differences are normal, since fabric weight varies a little between batches. Ask the supplier what tolerance they work to. When weighing a sample, use a dry towel, because damp cotton reads heavier.

Sizes and GSM vary by supplier, so treat this as a starting point.

Which GSM Should You Choose?

Under 400: light and quick drying. Good for gyms, pools and travel.
400 to 600: the everyday range. Most homes and mid-range hotels sit here.
600 and above: thick and plush. Common in luxury hotels and spas, but slower to dry and heavier to launder.

A hotel with heavy daily laundry often goes lighter to save on washing and drying costs. A resort that sells a premium stay usually goes heavier, because guests notice the feel right away.

Lbs per Dozen or GSM: Which to Trust?

Use both. GSM tells you how dense the fabric is. Lbs per dozen tells you what you actually receive at that size. If the two don’t match the towel dimensions, something is off in the quote.

Neither number shows fiber quality, yarn or weave. Two towels with the same weight can feel very different, so always order a sample.
